Did you know that October is Breast Cancer Month? If you are looking for the best pink October gifts for a loved one, friend, or yourself, you're at the right place. Pink October has become an event mainly to remind people about cancer and to create awareness about the early detection of cancer. Pink October is in fact not the National Breast Cancer Month because National can't be trademarked but it is more convenient than calling it National Breast Cancer Month. But What Is Pink October? Today, HighlyUnique will help you to know more about this special day!!
What Is Pink October?
Since 1985, the British-Swedish drug company AstraZeneca, which makes drugs to treat breast cancer, has been running a campaign to educate people about how to prevent and treat breast cancer. AstraZeneca made October Breast Cancer Month because they wanted to get the word out that mammograms are the best way to stop breast cancer. The campaign got a lot of attention, and on October 15, 2008, the European Breast Cancer Coalition made it European Breast Cancer Day. The pink ribbon has become a sign of the fight against breast cancer.
The pink ribbon represents the fight against breast cancer.
Why is it pink? At first, the ribbon was yellow and meant to make people aware. The American Breast Cancer Foundation was the first to give out the pink ribbon. In 1990, people who took part in the Race for the Cure got bright pink visors. Later, the people running the New York marathon were given pink ribbons by the organizers. In 1992, Evelyn Lauder, who was then the vice president of Estée Lauder, and Alexander Penny, who was then the editor of Self magazine, decided to make a special issue about cancer.
What is breast cancer?
Most cancers found in women in Europe are breast cancers. It is thought that nearly 30% of all cancers found in women are breast cancer. About 5 to 10% of breast cancers are hereditary, which means that they are caused by changes in genes. Every year, breast cancer is found in 1.7 million women. More than 500,000 people die from it. Even though it doesn't happen often, men can also get breast cancer (1 out of 100 diagnosed with breast cancer).
Breast cancer prevention
Methods for preventing breast cancer help stop and lower the risk of getting breast cancer. There are two ways to keep from getting breast cancer. Primary cancer prevention is anything that stops a cancerous process from starting, like changing your lifestyle or getting tested to find the disease before you have any symptoms. Some medical procedures can help find breast cancer early and diagnose it. This is called secondary prevention.
Primary cancer prevention
Studies have found a link between drinking too much alcohol, eating too much-saturated fat, being overweight, and getting breast cancer. When you drink too much or have a lot of body fat, your estrogen levels go up. This makes it more likely that you will get breast cancer.
To avoid getting breast cancer, you should live a healthy life:
- Be physically active, eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, and eat more fish, especially sea fish.
- You should eat less meat, especially fatty and canned meat.
- A mastectomy is also a form of primary prevention. This breast cancer surgery is mostly done on people who have a high risk of getting breast cancer because their BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes have been changed. A mastectomy cuts the chance of getting breast cancer by 90%. But experts talk about the pros and cons of taking such a radical step.
But the main ways to stop it aren't very good. Most of the time, it is not known what causes breast cancer. Because of this, it's important to take secondary precautions.
Secondary cancer prevention
For secondary prevention of breast cancer, screening and testing are used to try to find cancer in its early stages.
Finding breast cancer early is the key to being able to treat it successfully. Women should get regular preventive exams. Some of the tests that help fight breast cancer are Self-examination of the breasts, ultrasound of the breast glands, mammography, and genetic testing.
